About the museum
The regional information and documentation center for the state of Brandenburg is located in the building of the former BStU branch office in Frankfurt (Oder), which now belongs to the Federal Archives as the Stasi-Unterlagen-Archiv. It opened in December 1994.
The exhibition “Freiheit für meine Akte” uses 29 panels and several display cases with original material across three rooms and the foyer to explain how the Ministry for State Security was structured and how it worked. A particular focus is on the consequences of surveillance and Zersetzung (covert disintegration tactics) for those affected. The display also includes copies of Stasi files, among them the file of an informal collaborator (inoffizieller Mitarbeiter), the personnel file of a full-time staff member, and the file of an officer on special assignment.
The center aims to be a place of information and discussion and is aimed especially at young people and school classes. It offers guided tours, lectures, talks with contemporary witnesses, video screenings, and project days.
