About the museum
The building on Schulstraße goes back to a medieval sexton's house and served as the town school after the Reformation. After the great town fire of 1801, it was rebuilt uniformly for school purposes. After the Second World War it was used in various ways, and from 1947 to 2009 also as an Evangelical kindergarten.
After reunification, the building was saved from demolition and renovated in keeping with its heritage status as part of the old town restoration. In 2005 the city handed the municipal part over to the Heimatverein Lebus, which runs its museum and its association headquarters here.
The permanent exhibitions are spread across three floors: archaeology and the castle hill, geology, and the history of the bishopric, the region and the town are on the first floor; an exhibition on the painter Karl Lukas Honegger is on the second floor; and one on the writer Günter Eich, who grew up in Lebus, is on the top floor.
