About the museum
The museum has been housed in Brüggen Castle since 1979; the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1289. It was founded as a hunting and natural history museum. The sponsoring association was established in 1976, and the initial setup was made possible by the Deutscher Jagdschutzverband (German Hunting Protection Association), the Landesjagdverband NRW (NRW state hunting association) and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland. Since 2004 the house has been expanded and reoriented; today it is called Museum Mensch und Jagd.
The permanent exhibition of roughly 500 square meters has two themed areas. The first leads from the first hunter-gatherers in the savannas of Africa through the centuries to the hunting of today, and asks how much hunting has shaped human diet, physique, communication and culture. The second, "Good Reasons for Hunting Today", shows the landscapes of North Rhine-Westphalia in a room diorama and explains the tasks and conflicts of interest of modern hunting.
The museum is run by the non-profit association Museum Mensch und Jagd e. V., supported by the Burggemeinde Brüggen and a friends' association. The adjoining castle rooms provide space for further offerings, including a panoramic view from the historic castle tower.
