About the museum
Hildegard and Walter Tillmann acquired the roughly 400-year-old farmstead "Alt Kämpken" in Hombergen in 1975. It was first mentioned in 1619 and was formerly a toll station of the Counts of Schaesberg on the route from Hinsbeck to Venlo; the barn stored dried peat from the area of today's Krickenbecker Seen.
In 1983 the couple set up a museum in the barn for their private collection on Lower Rhine textile manufacturing, the "Sammlung Tillmann". A foundation was established in 2001 to secure its future. Today their daughter Ursula Tillmann-Salge runs the house.
On display are raw materials, tools, fabrics, pictures and books; spinning wheels, hand looms and even a Jacquard loom with punch-card control are in working order and are demonstrated. Each year one theme takes center stage, such as flax and linen, hemp, wool, cotton or silk. Invited artists also show changing works on textile themes. Volunteers look after visitors and sew, knit and felt pieces for the museum shop.
