About the museum

The building was erected in 1885 as a village school and served as a school and teacher's residence until 1973. From 1954 to 1973, the teacher and local historian Hans Joachim Bötefür (1928–2009) taught here. He focused especially on the geology of the Wanzeberg, but also on botany, folklore and the Low German language.

In 1993 he opened a local history and geology collection in the former bedroom. From 1995, the Amt Malliß (administrative association) and the municipality of Neu Kaliß made the rooms of the old village school available for his exhibitions. In 1996, a permanent exhibition on the history of the paper mill followed, along with a display on the mineral resources of southwest Mecklenburg and on lignite mining up to 1960. The upper floor has been used as a gallery since 1997.

The geological collection ranges from tiny mineralized foraminifera to heavy glacial boulders in the boulder garden. Since 2017, the house has borne the name of its founder. It lies in the Alt Kaliß district of the municipality of Neu Kaliß.
