About the museum
Steinbach am Glan was long known as "Juden-Steinbach" and was one of the largest Jewish rural communities in the Palatinate. Because the village belonged to the County of von der Leyen, Jews were able to settle here, whereas the Dukes of Zweibrücken prohibited settlement and money-lending. At times, roughly every third resident was Jewish.
The museum presents more than 200 years of Jewish life in the village and region. Panels tell the story of the community, and display cases hold ritual objects, photographs and documents. Also covered are the synagogue of 1725, which was destroyed in 1938, the Jewish school, the mikveh of 1870 and the Jewish cemetery, as well as persecution during the Nazi era.
The building lies on the Rundwanderweg Jüdische Kultur (circular hiking trail), which is part of the Begehbares Geschichtsbuch (walk-in history book) of the Verbandsgemeinde Oberes Glantal.
