About the museum

The nativity scene museum in Oberstadion opened shortly before Christmas 2008. It is run by the municipality of Oberstadion; funding from the EU's LEADER program and the state of Baden-Württemberg helped with its construction.

The museum building is the listed parish barn from 1612 on Kirchplatz, which was converted for the exhibition. Over 600 square meters on two floors are available for the collection.

Around 160 nativity scenes by nativity scene builders and woodcarvers from Germany, Austria, and Italy are on display. Among the highlights are a large historic nativity scene from Aachen with almost life-size wax figures and a huge background painting, a year-round nativity scene from Oberammergau in the attic, and a Last Supper depiction created for the museum with figures by an Italian artist. Besides the Christmas story, many scenes show further stages in the life of Jesus.

The museum is open seasonally during the Christmas period and around Easter; the municipality also maintains a memorial site for the children's author Christoph von Schmid.
