About the museum

Elector Max Emanuel had the Neues Schloss (New Palace) Schleißheim built from 1701 to plans by Henrico Zuccalli as a stately residence meant to underline his claim to the imperial crown. The War of the Spanish Succession interrupted the work in 1704, when little more than the shell had been completed. Only after the elector returned from exile in 1715 did construction continue under Joseph Effner – instead of the planned grand complex, only the monumental main wing was ultimately built.

The festive sequence of rooms from the staircase through the Great Hall and the Victory Hall to the Great Gallery is distinctive. Cosmas Damian Asam and Jacopo Amigoni created the ceiling paintings; the fresco in the Great Hall was considered the largest ceiling painting in the world for several decades. Stucco, carvings and the surviving state beds of the electoral couple show courtly interior decoration of the early 18th century.

Thanks to the painting collection founded by Max Emanuel, the palace had been an increasingly publicly accessible gallery palace since the late 18th century. In this tradition, the Bavarian State Painting Collections now show a gallery of European Baroque painting in the electoral apartments and halls, which reopened after extensive restoration in 2001 – 300 years after construction began.

All the great schools of the 17th and 18th centuries are represented: Italian painters such as Lodovico Carracci, Guercino and Luca Giordano, Flemish painters such as Rubens, van Dyck and David Teniers the Younger, the German Joachim von Sandrart, and the Frenchman Joseph Vivien with pictures from the elector's circle.
