About the museum

It all began with the mobile "Museum im Koffer" (Museum in a Suitcase): from 1980, Kristine Popp brought hands-on activities such as an old-fashioned laundry day to schools, and in 1983 the supporting association Museum im Koffer e. V. was founded. In the years that followed, numerous traveling projects on everyday history, archaeology, other cultures and the natural sciences were created; in 1998 the association received the Deutscher Kinderkulturpreis (German Children's Culture Prize).

After a trial run in the Freibank building in Fürth, the so-called Kachelbau on the former slaughterhouse grounds was converted into a children's cultural center, which the museum shares with the Theater Mummpitz and other initiatives. The Kindermuseum opened there on three floors on April 1, 2001. That same October, a fire in the storeroom destroyed almost all of the traveling projects.

The museum has grown steadily ever since; at the end of 2012 the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment recognized it as an environmental education center. In the permanent exhibition "Zeitreisen" (Time Travels), children experience everyday life around 1900 compared with today, while "Schatzkammer Erde" (Earth's Treasure Chamber) is devoted to natural cycles, raw materials and climate protection and houses a small rainforest house with live animals. These are joined by seasonal special topics such as chicks hatching at Easter or the chocolate workshop in winter. The association also lends many of its exhibitions to other institutions.
