Garnisonmuseum Nürnberg
Military history museum in a 1941 air-raid bunker: uniforms, dioramas and soldiers' biographies from 950 years of garrison history in Middle Franconia.
About the museum
The Garnisonmuseum (Garrison Museum) was founded in 1992, when the withdrawal of troops signaled the end of Nuremberg as a major military base. It is run by the friends' association Förderverein Garnisonmuseum Nürnberg e. V., whose members look after the collection, exhibition and tours on a volunteer basis. The museum first showed its exhibits as a separate section of what was then the Centrum Industriekultur.
Since 1996, the museum has been independent and housed in the listed high-rise bunker at Hohe Marter. The seven-story round building of reinforced concrete with brick cladding was built in 1941 as an air-raid shelter, with walls about 2.40 meters thick; the interior was converted for the exhibition. In 2006, the Spittlertorturm tower on the city wall was added as the location for the archive and specialist library.
Across more than 20 exhibition areas, the museum traces military history, chiefly of Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen – from the Free Imperial City's troops through the Royal Bavarian Army, the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht to the Bundeswehr and the US forces. Large dioramas, such as a 1916 trench or a Bundeswehr barracks room, bring soldiers' everyday life to life; complete family estates tell the life stories of individual soldiers. A photo and document collection and a specialist library of about 10,000 volumes complement the exhibition.
