About the museum
The museum opened in 1990 in the town center of Schönberg in the Probstei. It is run by a non-profit association that has existed since 1988 and whose members take on many tasks on a voluntary basis; the municipality provides the rooms. The museum is housed in the former local court building on Knüllgasse.
The main exhibition traces how children grew up, played, learned and worked since 1890. It is arranged by political eras, from the Kaiserreich (German Empire) to the Bundesrepublik (Federal Republic), and shows children's and youth books, everyday clothing and toys from more than a hundred years.
Since 2015, a fully furnished village school classroom from around 1900, with original furniture and old teaching aids, has been part of the house; during tours, lessons of the time are re-enacted there. In addition, there are changing exhibitions, Sunday activities for children and families, and programs for school classes and senior groups. The museum cooperates with the Gemeinschaftsschule Probstei in Schönberg.
