About the museum
The history of the museum begins with the farmer Robert Lesky from Ratjendorf, who from the 1950s onward saved agricultural tools and machines from decay. In 1980 he handed his collection over to the municipality of Schönberg; it was first shown temporarily in the former district court. In 1983 the association Probsteier Heimatmuseum was founded and drove the expansion forward.
The site chosen was the old Göttsch farmstead, one of the last historic farms in the village center, whose origins go back to the 16th century. In 1984/85 the drive-through barn and plank granary with bake house were completed as the first exhibition buildings; the main house was dedicated on June 11, 1989. Since then the museum has been located entirely on the farm. The main house is a thatched Low German timber hall house (Fachhallenhaus), now in its state of 1850.
The permanent exhibition offers insight into rural domestic culture and the living conditions of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and explains the Probstei as a former domain of Kloster Preetz. On display are, among other things, costumes, special pottery and marquetry work. Markets, theater evenings, concerts and readings take place in the Diele (central hall), and there is a seasonal program with demonstrations such as bread baking, historic bicycle tours and town walks.
