About the museum
The St. Annen monastery church was built between 1493 and 1512 for the Observant Franciscans in Kamenz. After the Reformation and the dissolution of the monastery it remained in use as a church and served the services of the Protestant Sorbs until 1926.
After comprehensive restoration, the church reopened at the end of August 2011. Working together, the Städtische Sammlungen Kamenz and the Evangelical Lutheran parish, which owns the church and its artworks, created the sacred art museum at the same time. Since then the house has combined museum operations with the character of a consecrated church.
At its center is an ensemble of five late Gothic carved altarpieces under a rib vault, unique in the wider region. Objects belonging to the parish also form part of the collection, such as a reliquary altar from around 1400, the Bornkindl from the Reformation era and a painting by Wolfgang Krodel, a pupil of Cranach. In 2014 the museum received an award from the Stiftung zur Bewahrung kirchlicher Baudenkmäler in Deutschland; it is also a station on the Via Sacra.
