About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Reichenau dates back to 1930, when senior teacher (Oberlehrer) Hermann Richter set up a school museum in the converted attic of the village school of the time. After the war, the post-war teacher (Neulehrer) Konrad Weichert looked after the collection for more than four decades and guided visitors through the rooms.
Since 2002 the Heimat- und Museumsförderverein Reichenau (local heritage and museum friends' association) has been responsible for the museum. It was founded in 2001 and coordinated with the municipality of Haselbachtal. The association continually expands the exhibition; many residents and guests contribute items.
The display shows village life in earlier times: recreated living, working and shopping areas (including "Gunhilds Laden"), school life, the war and post-war years, and the period of inflation. A separate section is devoted to the granite of the region. There are also taxidermied animals from forest and field, tools of farmers, foresters and craftsmen, home weaving (Heimweberei), photographs of village history, and excavation finds from the Late Bronze Age.
A second building of the association, the Heimathaus, built in 1845 as a poorhouse and converted in 2005/06, serves as a meeting place and a simple lodging for pilgrims on the Jakobsweg (Way of St. James).
