Schauanlage und Museum der Granitindustrie
Quarry museum in the former Prelle granite quarry in Häslich with a demonstration workshop, field railway, and nature trail; guided tours by registration.
About the museum
In the Häslich district of the municipality of Haselbachtal, granodiorite was quarried on a large scale from the 19th century on and sold as Lusatian granite. In the 1930s, several hundred stoneworkers were employed in the quarries of the area. The Prelle quarry operated from 1913 to 1971.
From 1991, dedicated locals of Häslich collected machines, tools, and documents from the region's quarries; in 1998 the friends' association was founded. With the support of numerous sponsors, it built a demonstration site on the grounds of the Prelle.
On display are the quarrying and processing technology of the 19th and 20th centuries as well as the harsh working and living conditions of the stoneworkers. The site includes a demonstration workshop, crane systems and stone-processing machines, and a field railway. A nature trail leads around the quarry, covering geology, plants, and animals; eagle owls breed in a neighboring quarry.
