Kleines Bienenmuseum Oberlichtenau
Museum run by the beekeepers' association in an old half-timbered house in Oberlichtenau, with historic beekeeping equipment and a demonstration apiary.
About the museum
The Oberlichtenau beekeepers' association opened the small museum on April 30, 1995. The impetus came from members of the association and the then mayor, who campaigned for using a half-timbered house more than 200 years old in the village as an exhibition venue.
The core of the collection consists of two estates of local beekeepers: equipment and documents of a beekeeper from Friedersdorf, which his daughter provided as a permanent loan, and the specialist material of a Burkersdorf bee breeder who had built up his own Carniolan bee breeding line.
Between 2019 and 2022 the half-timbered house was extensively renovated. The museum includes a specialist library of around 300 books and numerous journals on beekeeping, the oldest volume of which dates from the late 18th century. On the grounds the association also operates a teaching and demonstration apiary.
