About the museum
The mill goes back to the Cistercian convent that the margraves founded in 1271. The present mill building has existed in its basic form since around 1752 and for centuries used water power. Flour was milled here until 1959, and mixed animal feed was produced until 1978.
Most of the technology has survived intact. A Francis turbine installed in 1919 once also supplied the village with electricity. The complex also includes a historic cellar bakery and a miller's house with a traditional black kitchen (Schwarze Küche).
During demonstrations, museum miller Martin Joost starts the milling machinery and explains the path of the grain from the Windenboden (hoist floor) through the Steinboden (millstone floor), the sifter (Sichter) and on to the bagging bench (Absackbank).
