About the museum
The Premonstratensian canons' abbey of Steingaden existed for around 650 years until its secularization. The Klostermuseum shows, in the rooms of the former pharmacy wing, how this history developed, and is now housed in the rectory (Pfarrhof).
The exhibition covers, among other things, the founding by the Welfs, the era of the Crusades, Saint Norbert and the Premonstratensian order, as well as the building history of the monastery complex. One gallery is devoted to notable prelates; another section to the secularization.
The objects from all periods include a monastery nativity scene from the 18th to the 20th century, plus paintings and sculptures from former monastery holdings. Large photographs and detailed texts complement the objects. The museum is run jointly by the municipality and the parish; it is open only in the summer half of the year.
