About the museum
The Wallfahrtsmuseum opened in 1988 in the Prälatenhaus of the Wieskirche, in the commemorative year of the 250th anniversary of the so-called Miracle of Tears. It was built up over decades by Professor Thomas Finkenstaedt and his wife Helene from Wildsteig, who contributed their knowledge of the veneration of the Scourged Saviour. It occupies two rooms on the second floor of the north side of the building, which was erected in the 18th century for the priests providing pilgrimage pastoral care.
The exhibition follows the development of the pilgrimage from the Miracle of Tears at the Lorihof, through the small chapel, to the construction of the Wieskirche. On view in thirteen mostly thematic groups are, among other things, a carrying figure of the brotherhood from the 18th century, three books of miracles, announcement slips, devotional images, votive offerings and pilgrim souvenirs. There is also a votive picture painted by Dominikus Zimmermann in 1757, a timeline, maps of the Pfaffenwinkel and reproductions of copperplate engravings by Michael Wening.
