The Kommunale Galerie Berlin has existed since 1974 and sees itself as a forum for contemporary art in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and for the art scene of the whole city. It is an institution of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office, culture department, and shows painting, photography, graphics, video, performance and installations by artists who live and work in Berlin.
The house serves as a project space for artists' associations as well as a first platform for young positions; new exhibitions change at intervals of several weeks. Decisions on applications for the exhibition program are made each time for the following year. In addition there are projects in the urban space and events such as curator-led tours.
The gallery also includes the studio, a venue for cultural education and art mediation with programs for children and adults, and the Artothek founded in the 1970s. It lends over 1,400 works by contemporary artists, predominantly from Berlin, with a focus on Berlin urban photography, to Berliners for a limited period. The gallery is a member of the Arbeitskreis Kommunale Galerien Berlin (working group of municipal galleries in Berlin).
Admission is free.
Admission is free. Lending artworks from the Artothek costs €2 to €10 depending on the work, for 10 or 20 weeks, and is reserved for people with a primary residence in Berlin.
Access to the ground floor is barrier-free; for the rooms on the second floor, please ask staff, who will unlock the lift.
Great for kids & families
The studio offers regular programs and art courses for children and adults; the activity booklet "Galerie-Safari" invites children and young people on a discovery trip through the gallery.
