About the museum
The collection goes back to the volunteer German Red Cross (DRK) member Hans-Joachim Trümper, who from 1978 onward rescued medical supplies from the Neukölln district association that were being discarded, and stored them in basement rooms. The collection grew so large that for the district association's 100th anniversary in 1988 it was first shown as an exhibition in the Neukölln Heimatmuseum (local history museum). It then toured as a traveling exhibition to several locations, most recently the Schöneberg Town Hall.
On June 6, 1990, the Rotkreuz-Museum Berlin opened in two rooms on Britzer Damm in Neukölln. In 1995, it moved to the Berlin state association of the Red Cross at Bundesallee 73, where more space was available. In 2000, the museum was among the founders of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der deutschen Rotkreuz-Museen (Working Group of German Red Cross Museums); in 2003, the volunteers founded the independent association Rotkreuz-Museum Berlin e. V.
Since the redesign of 2004/05, the museum has been located at Bachestraße 11 in Friedenau; in 2012, the exhibition was presented anew after renovation and expansion by the volunteers. The permanent exhibition "Im Mittelpunkt der Mensch" (The Human Being at the Center) tells the story of the Red Cross from its founding in 1863 to the present. On display are, among other things, postcards, posters, medals, stamps, toys, and service uniforms and equipment from various eras.
