Kreisgalerie Schloss Meßkirch

Art museum in the south wing of Meßkirch Castle, with the art collection of Landkreis Sigmaringen.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

Meßkirch Castle was built between 1557 and 1563 under Count Froben Christoph von Zimmern and is considered the earliest four-wing Renaissance complex north of the Alps. Since 1961, it has belonged to the town of Meßkirch, which has restored it comprehensively since the 1980s.

In the south wing, the so-called Talflügel (valley wing), the Kreisgalerie opened in March 2006, after renovation that began in 2005. It occupies two floors with about 450 square meters. The ground floor presents selected works from the art collection of Landkreis Sigmaringen in six sections, from Gothic sculpture and Baroque altar panels to contemporary art.

The district art collection, built up since the 1980s, documents regional art. Three focal points shape it: the Cubist and woodcut pioneer Gottfried Graf (1881–1938), the sculptor Anton Hiller (1893–1985) with drawings and sculptures, and the painter Albert Birkle (1900–1986) with landscapes and works of the expressive realism of the 1920s.

  • Located in the Renaissance Meßkirch Castle
