About the museum
The Runder Turm (Round Tower) was probably built around 1600 as a two-story rondel to strengthen the town fortifications at the vulnerable southwest corner. During the Thirty Years' War, probably when the town was occupied in 1633, it was badly damaged and was no longer militarily useful.
In 1737, the town sold the ruin. The buyer placed an octagonal residential floor with a tent roof on the rondel, and the tower then served as a dwelling for more than 230 years. In 1970, the gold and silversmith and court councillor (Hofrat) Georg Zimmerer acquired the tower and gave it to the town on condition that it be used culturally, above all as a local history museum.
Since 1987, the tower has served as a local history museum. It is run by the Heimatverein Sigmaringen (Sigmaringen Local Heritage Association), founded in 2005. The permanent exhibition on the upper floors shows the town's development, civic life and art in the princely residence town of Sigmaringen; the coats of arms on the outer wall recall the former lords of the County of Sigmaringen.
