About the museum
The Jewish community of Kronach was founded in 1880 and had a synagogue built of Kronach sandstone, which was consecrated on October 5, 1883. As fewer community members remained in the 1930s, they sold the building in February 1938 for a symbolic price to the city of Kronach, which remains the owner today.
The building was converted into a medical supply depot of the Red Cross, which saved it from destruction during the Pogromnacht. Later it served as a warehouse and at times stood empty; demolition was discussed. In 1992, committed citizens founded the Aktionskreis Kronacher Synagoge, which has leased the building since 1998 and restored it with grants and donations.
On October 4, 2002, the synagogue reopened as a memorial site and event space. Today, exhibitions, lectures, readings, and concerts take place there. Guided tours explaining Judaism are offered for school classes, groups, and individuals. The association works on a volunteer basis and is financed by donations.
