The exhibition looks back on 90 years of the Segelklub Juist (Juist Sailing Club): regattas on the Juist tidal flats (Watt), the history of the boathouse and the island's three boat harbours. On view until March 2027.
About the museum
The museum traces back to 1934: after the closure of the reform-education school "Schule am Meer," teacher Fritz Hafner offered the island community his natural history teaching collection as the foundation for a small museum. It became the "Seewasseraquarium und Heimatmuseum" (seawater aquarium and local history museum), whose aquariums later grew to as many as 30 tanks.
In a second phase the house was expanded into a coastal museum, where cartography and coastal studies played a major role. Several extensions and additions gave it its present size. The seals that lived in the museum's pool from 1957 are especially remembered; this practice ended in the mid-1970s.
Today the house presents itself as an island museum with about 500 square meters of exhibition space. Eleven rooms tell, among other things, the story of the development of tourism, traffic between the mainland and the island, and the formation and early settlement of Juist. Further rooms are devoted to the Schule am Meer.
