About the museum
The village of Höfen in the Monschau region lived for a long time from cloth production: there were eleven weaving businesses here, and nearly every family had relatives in the trade. In the mid-1970s this era ended, when the large cloth factories in Monschau and the small businesses in the villages closed.
The impetus for the museum came from the then cultural officer of the Eifelverein Höfen, Dr. Bernd Jansen. The small weaving business of his uncle Hermann Jansen, which operated from 1957 to 1974 on Alter Weg, was to be dissolved; its inventory would have ended up with a scrap dealer. Jansen's widow donated the four looms along with their equipment to the association.
Between 2006 and 2010, the Höfen local group of the Eifelverein, with support from the NRW-Stiftung and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland, built an extension onto Haus Seebend that faithfully recreates the weaving hall. The house itself, built in 1911 as a hunting lodge, has served the association as a nature information center since 2000.
