About the museum

The museum was established in 1966 as a foundation under civil law with the mission of collecting and exhibiting art from the historical German settlement areas in Eastern Europe; it opened its doors as the Ostdeutsche Galerie in 1970. It is funded jointly by the federal government, the Free State of Bavaria, and the city of Regensburg. It received its current name in 2003, and Agnes Tieze has directed the museum since 2012.

The Kunstforum is housed in a former municipal gym hall built in 1871 by the Stadtpark, which has been used for exhibitions since 1906 and was incorporated into the Oberpfälzische Landesausstellung (Upper Palatinate regional exhibition) in 1910. Striking features are the red columns of an installation in front of the entrance and the two-story hall inside.

The collection comprises around 2,000 paintings, some 500 sculptures and objects, and tens of thousands of works on paper. It spans Romanticism to the present, combining well-known names such as Lovis Corinth, Käthe Kollwitz, Oskar Kokoschka, and Emil Orlik with artists from Breslau, Danzig, Königsberg, or Prague who can be rediscovered here. With the Lovis Corinth Prize, the museum has for decades honored artists with ties to Eastern Europe and showcased their works in exhibitions.

The graphic arts wing has been undergoing renovation since 2022, so the museum can only be used to a limited extent. The full reopening with a newly conceived permanent exhibition has been announced for mid-2027. Fifteen sculptures from the collection stand in the adjacent Stadtpark and on the forecourt.
