About the museum

Artfully decorated iron stove plates have been documented in Upper Hesse since the Middle Ages. The collaboration of woodcarvers and ironworkers made the region a center of this art. In Hirzenhain, Count Ludwig-Christian zu Stolberg-Gedern had the first charcoal blast furnace built in 1678; stove plates were cast on the site from an early date.

Toward the end of the 18th century, technical progress made filigree iron casting possible, for which Berlin foundries became especially known. After the division of Germany, the Buderus iron works in Wetzlar carried this expertise forward and in 1947 set up an art casting department at the Hirzenhain plant. Its first head, the sculptor Peter Lipp, laid the foundation of the museum with a sample collection of Prussian iron casting and existing historical stove plates.

The collection includes jewelry, medallions, sculptures and reliefs as well as everyday objects, such as inkstands, clock holders, bowls and paperweights. After the closure of the art foundry in May 2015, the art casting "Made in Hirzenhain" from 1947 to 2015 moved more into focus. A support association wants to keep the museum and its exhibits on site. Because of extensive renovation and modernization work, it is not open at present.
