About the museum
The building on Gerbergasse was originally a residential house and came into the possession of the town of Nidda in 1901. In 1906 it was converted into the fire brigade's equipment house with a hose tower and outbuildings, and was inaugurated as the new engine house in June 1907. For over seven decades it served the Volunteer Fire Brigade as its base, until the brigade moved to a modern equipment house in 1977 and the half-timbered building was given over to other uses.
In 2006 the fire brigade and the town returned to the old engine house. Members of the brigade renovated the building in around 780 hours of voluntary work and set up a museum in it, which opened later the same year. It is the only fire brigade museum in the Wetterau district and is run by the museum team of the Nidda Volunteer Fire Brigade.
On around 100 square metres, the exhibition shows the development of firefighting in the municipality of Nidda between roughly 1850 and 1950: hand-operated pressure pumps from Nidda, Stornfels and Geiß-Nidda, a twelve-metre-high wooden tilting ladder, portable pumps, uniforms, helmets, plus photos and files. Among the oldest items is a straw fire bucket sealed with clay from the 17th century. The showpiece is a light fire-fighting group vehicle built by Daimler-Benz in 1941 with a portable pump trailer, which the brigade has returned to its original delivery condition.
