Lars Eidinger. Present Perfect. Im Dialog mit der Sammlung

Photographs and videos by the actor Lars Eidinger capturing everyday scenes of affluent society enter into dialogue for the first time with works from the Kunsthalle's collection, such as those by Yves Klein and Gilbert & George.

About the museum

The Kunsthalle Tübingen was created in 1971 thanks to a donation from the sisters Paula Zundel and Margarete Fischer, daughters of the industrialist Robert Bosch. They funded the construction of an exhibition building for the city in memory of the painter Georg Friedrich Zundel. The single-story building with excellent daylight was built in what was then a new residential area on the northern edge of town.

Under founding director Götz Adriani, the Kunsthalle quickly gained an international reputation. It showed contemporary artists who later became world-famous, such as Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Claes Oldenburg and Richard Serra, at an early stage. From the late 1970s, major solo exhibitions on Cézanne, Degas, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso each drew hundreds of thousands of visitors. The proceeds financed infrastructure and an administrative building, and the Kunsthalle was converted into a nonprofit foundation.

After a comprehensive renovation, the building gained an additional exhibition hall in 2017. Nicole Fritz has directed the Kunsthalle since 2018, focusing on socially relevant thematic exhibitions and on education for a broad audience; in 2022 the museum received the Lotto-Museumspreis Baden-Württemberg. In addition to works by Georg Friedrich Zundel, its own collection comprises some 500 works from the 1960s to the present.
