The first comprehensive show in Germany devoted to the American photographer Rodney Smith, with more than 100 works whose staged, often surreal-looking imagery is reminiscent of Magritte.
About the museum
The Kunsthalle Vogelmann opened in 2010 as an exhibition venue of the Städtische Museen Heilbronn (Heilbronn municipal museums). It is named after the Heilbronn entrepreneur and art collector Ernst Franz Vogelmann (1915–2003), whose foundation made the building possible with a major donation. While the Museum im Deutschhof presents the collections on the region's natural and cultural history, the Kunsthalle provides space for changing exhibitions of visual art from the 19th century to the present.
The understated building was designed by the Zurich architect Felipe Rodriguez, who had already remodeled the neighboring Harmonie in 2001. Together with this concert and congress center and the Kunstverein Heilbronn, the Kunsthalle on the Allee forms a cultural ensemble in the heart of the city center.
Up to four exhibitions are shown each year. One focus is sculpture, including a series on special materials such as paper, glass, or textiles; a second is modernist photography; and a third is artists of classical modernism such as Otto Mueller, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, or Emil Nolde, as well as lesser-known artists from around 1900. The Vogelmann Foundation also awards the Ernst Franz Vogelmann Prize for Sculpture.
