About the museum
Winegrowing shaped Erlenbach and Binswangen for centuries: it is documented as early as 1130, and until the early 20th century wine determined the livelihood of both districts. The present-day “Alte Kelter” (old wine press house) in Binswangen was built in 1574 by the Teutonic Order. With its massive sandstone walls and an unusually wide-span timber roof, it is regarded as a monument of architectural and cultural history.
The impulse for a museum came in 1980 from the mayor of the time. After the press house and the cask stands were restored and the large tree press and several wooden screw presses had been acquired, the Weinbaumuseum was opened on May 17, 1987.
When the house later saw little activity, the Förderkreis Weinbaumuseum Erlenbach-Binswangen e. V. (friends' association) was founded in 2013. It reopened the museum and brought it back to life with wine tastings and events. Today the museum covers about 450 square meters with several hundred objects, from cultivation through harvest to bottling, plus an original cooper's workshop. The friends' association is working on a redesign and modernization of the exhibition.
