About the museum
The Kunstmuseum traces back to a support circle founded in 1989 that wanted to build a collection of regional art from Franconia and the Upper Palatinate. In 1998 the Loewenichsches Palais was acquired; in 2001 the decision was made to set up a museum of its own there.
The Baroque palace was built in the mid-18th century to plans by Joachim Christoph Herr and served the Loewenich family as a residence and tobacco manufactory from 1817 to 1941. A modern extension doubled the exhibition space to about 300 square meters.
The museum shows changing solo, group, thematic and commemorative exhibitions, as well as photography and art from regional collections, with a focus on artists from Erlangen, the Nuremberg area, Franconia and the Upper Palatinate.
