About the museum

The Platenhäuschen (Platen cottage) lies on the northwest side of the Erlangen Burgberg (castle hill), surrounded by a grove called Solitude. The small garden house was built in the 18th century; the listed building records give 1756. The name Solitude goes back to the Romantic appreciation of nature that was especially popular at court at the time.

The poet August Graf von Platen (1796–1835) studied language and literature in Erlangen and withdrew to this cottage in the summer of 1824. There he wrote, among other works, his comedy "Der Schatz des Rhampsinit" (The Treasure of Rhampsinitus).

Over time the house served various purposes, including as a memorial to a poet, as a museum and as living space. Today the Erlangen City Archive looks after the building and holds the Platen Archive, a collection of works by and about the poet. The exhibition shows Platen's life, work and reception, as well as the history of the cottage. It consists of two rooms; the upper floor can only be reached by an outside staircase.
