Kunstpalais Erlangen
Municipal museum of international contemporary art in the Baroque Palais Stutterheim on Erlangen's Marktplatz, with changing exhibitions.
About the museum
The Kunstpalais goes back to the Städtische Galerie Erlangen, founded in 1974. It is housed in the Palais Stutterheim, a Baroque city palace built between 1728 and 1730 for Christian Hieronymus von Stutterheim on the Marktplatz – opposite the palace and in the middle of the former Huguenot town.
After extensive renovation, the building reopened in 2010 under the new name Kunstpalais. The exhibition space on the first floor and in the basement more than doubled, today about 500 square meters. Since 2015, Amely Deiss has directed the municipal museum.
There is no permanent exhibition: each year the Kunstpalais shows four to six changing exhibitions. Often artists have their first institutional solo show or their first major appearance in Germany here; alongside these are thematic group exhibitions on social issues. For many projects, specially designed catalogs and artists' books are published.
The Städtische Sammlung specializes in reproduced art and comprises more than 4,500 prints, multiples, artists' books and portfolio works of international art since 1945 – from Josef Albers and Joseph Beuys to younger positions. It regularly feeds into group exhibitions. A broad education program with tours, workshops in the museum's own studio and offerings for schools anchors the museum in the city.
