About the museum
The house on the Smal Joed in Suurhusen was built around 1679 and initially served as a poorhouse, later as a farmhands' house. When it was to be demolished in the early 1990s, citizens secured its preservation. In October 1990 the association "Geschichtswerkstatt Landarbeiterhaus Suurhusen" was founded, which bought the building in 1991 from the municipality of Hinte for a symbolic one mark. Since 1995 the museum has belonged to the Museumsverbund Ostfriesland (East Frisian museum network).
After restoration, the first own exhibition "Landarbeiterleben in der Marsch 1900–1950" opened in 1997. It shows the cramped living conditions of a farmhand family: a parlor of about 20 square meters with an open hearth, two box beds (Schlafbutzen), a pantry and a storage cellar; around 1900 two adults and up to six children lived here.
The holdings comprise about 900 exhibits, including a model of Suurhusen from about 1750, and an extensive archive with documents, eyewitness accounts and photos. A kitchen garden shows the cultivation of potatoes, beans and vegetables, and the association publishes a series on regional history.
