About the museum
The Lebendiges Bienenmuseum Knüllwald is run privately, without additional financial support, by master beekeeper Erika Geiseler and biologist Hans-Joachim Flügel (Diplom-Biologe). The sponsor is the Verein Lebendiges Bienenmuseum e. V. The museum is housed in a renovated half-timbered house with an L-shaped plan on the edge of Niederbeisheim.
The exhibition shows the relationship between people and bees. The focus is on traditional beekeeping in Northern Hesse; in addition there are objects from Europe, North Africa, Asia and America. It ranges from Zeidlerei, which used wild bee colonies, to today's stationary and migratory beekeeping; beehives and honey extractors are represented in many of the pieces. A separate section is devoted to heath beekeepers with straw skeps and swarm-catching bags. The biology of bees and wasps is also explained.
The permanent exhibition room was rebuilt from winter 2018/19 with funding from a LEADER program, so that it can be visited without a guide. The outdoor area has a nature garden; in the museum café in the former barn, coffee, Bienenstich and honey sandwiches are served.
