About the museum
For more than a hundred years, Beiseförth was considered a stronghold of basket making in Hesse. The basket makers and dealers of the village supplied customers throughout the state with potato, fodder, laundry, and carrying baskets, and many other everyday objects made of willow. Especially fine pieces went into dowries, and worn-out baskets served as hen nests.
The museum presents this tradition in a small half-timbered house on Mühlenstraße, covering about 60 square meters. It shows the willow work, the individual steps of basket making, and the variety of finished basketry, including children's cradles, chests, and baskets of all kinds from the turn of the century to the present.
Showcases with old documents and tools, as well as photos and display panels, offer insight into the rural daily life of earlier times. In a very small space, the exhibits are supplemented by numerous explanations, so the museum not only preserves objects but also explains connections in rural everyday history, past and present. The house is looked after by the Heimat- und Kulturverein Beiseförth, with which groups can register at any time by arrangement.
