First solo museum exhibition by the Brazilian-Argentine artist, with new video works filmed in Brazil as well as photography and sculpture; at its center is the relationship between art and spirituality.
The 2024 award winner of the Günther-Peill-Stiftung combines collage-like video works into an immersive installation and also shows embroidered textile works.
About the museum
The museum goes back to an endowment from the Hoesch family of Düren industrialists, who provided a large sum at the end of the 19th century in memory of the entrepreneur Leopold Hoesch (1820–1899). Aachen architect Georg Frentzen designed a lavish Neo-Baroque building, which opened in November 1905. Together with the municipal theater built shortly afterward and St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche), it shaped the ensemble on Hoeschplatz; the bronze figures "Studium" and "Phantasie" by Karl Krauß have stood at the entrance since the opening.
During the air raid on Düren in November 1944, the roofs, the glass domes, and parts of the wings were destroyed. Reconstruction was completed in 1952 in a simplified form without domes. From 2007 to 2010, the listed building was renovated and complemented by a modern extension by architect Peter Kulka, the "Günther Peill Forum". Since reopening in June 2010, the museum has had nearly 3,000 square meters of exhibition space.
The collection ranges from late Impressionism through Die Brücke, Der Blaue Reiter, and Rhenish Expressionism to New Objectivity, Concrete Art, and ZERO. A particular focus is art on and made of paper, closely linked with the Düren paper biennials and the neighboring Papiermuseum; the graphic collection comprises almost 10,000 sheets. Foundations such as the Günther-Peill-Stiftung, which regularly exhibits its award winners, and the Hubertus Schoeller Stiftung shape today's program of contemporary art.
