About the museum
The Düren regional association of the Bund Deutscher Karneval established the museum in 1994 to document and preserve the diverse carnival customs of the Rhineland and the northern Eifel. Items are collected not only in the Düren district but also in parts of the Euskirchen and Rhein-Erft districts.
At first the museum was housed in the old Rentei in Niederzier. Because exhibition and storage space there was no longer sufficient, it moved in 2006 to the former nurses' residence of the St. Augustinus Hospital in Lendersdorf. After that building was demolished to make way for a new hospital building, the museum reopened in January 2016 on the lower level of the new south wing.
On display are medals, photographs, programme booklets, posters, newspaper clippings, uniforms, flags, models of carnival floats as well as film and video documents. The affiliated carnival clubs can present their history from time to time in a dedicated area. The museum is run by volunteers and funded by donations and contributions from a support association.
