Liszt-Haus
Former court gardener's house by the Park an der Ilm where Franz Liszt lived from 1869 to 1886; visitors can see his furnished living quarters with a Bechstein grand piano.
About the museum
The Neoclassical house on the western edge of the Park an der Ilm was built in the late 18th century as the residence of the court gardens and was remodeled in 1819 by Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray.
Franz Liszt had already worked in Weimar as court music director from 1848 to 1861. For his second stay in Weimar, Grand Duke Carl Alexander placed the upper floor at his disposal, since his former Weimar home, the Altenburg, was no longer available. The composer lived here during the summer months from 1869 until his death in 1886. Here he taught piano students from many countries and regularly hosted musical matinees.
As early as 1887, Carl Alexander had the apartment opened as a memorial. After damage in World War II, the house was repaired between 1948 and 1952; today it belongs to the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. Following a conservation-based reconstruction, the current permanent exhibition presents the furnished rooms on the second floor: the music salon, study, bedroom, dining room and servant's room.
