About the museum
The Löhe-Zeit-Museum goes back to the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Neuendettelsau und Umgebung (local history society of Neuendettelsau and surroundings), which has collected objects on Wilhelm Löhe and his era since its founding in 1991. Löhe, founder of the Neuendettelsau Diakonie, still shapes the town today.
The museum sees itself as a social history museum and shows the life of ordinary people around 1850, including its less glamorous sides such as poverty and pauperism. On display are craftsmen's tools, a Löhe room with original furniture of the pastor, a farmhouse bedroom from 1855/1860 and, in contrast, the sleeping quarters of a farmhand.
A second focus is emigration to America. Löhe supported it and put together groups, each led by a pastor, so that between 1845 and 1851 four Franconian settlements arose in the USA: Frankenmuth, Frankentrost, Frankenlust and Frankenhilf. According to the museum, it is the only museum in Bavaria on this subject. A separate area shows changing special exhibitions; around 2,000 visitors come each year.
