About the museum

Heilsbronn's first local history museum opened in 1905 in the former abbot's building of the monastery complex and was regarded in the 1920s as one of the most beautiful provincial museums in Bavaria. After World War II the building was sold to the Protestant regional church, the collection had to make way, much was lost, and the salvaged remains ended up in the attic of the Konventhaus.

From 1995 the local heritage association showed part of the holdings in the former watchman's apartment of the Katharinenturm (St. Catherine's Tower). When the town, which had acquired the Konventhaus in 1937, had the building thoroughly renovated, it offered the association the attic for a new museum. It opened in 2006; an elevator tower was built to improve access.

The present concept tells the story of the Cistercian monastery from its founding in 1132 to its dissolution in 1578 and documents the Hohenzollern burial vault in the Münster (minster). Further themes include the period after secularization, with the monastery administrative office, the Fürstenschule (princely school) and Protestant parish life, as well as the town's development from the 18th to the 20th century, for example in medicine, trades, leisure, public safety, and war and peace. Text panels and exhibits present these stages.
