About the museum

The Märklineum is the works museum of the Göppingen toy and model railway company Märklin. The tradition goes back to around 1900, when there was a "sample room" where visitors could view the company's products. In 1958/59 this became an exhibition space at the main works, which showed current products as well as pieces from earlier times. After the administration moved to Holzheimer Straße, the museum area was set up there anew in 1979 and expanded by one room in 1985. In June 2006 the museum moved back to "Werk 1" at Reuschstraße 6, where it is located today.

The exhibition spans several levels and tells the story of the company, founded in 1859, from early tinplate toys, doll kitchens, metal construction sets and steam engines to model trains in various gauges. Special individual pieces such as the "Millennium-Krokodil" with a platinum casing or a Z-gauge locomotive inside a light bulb stand alongside media stations and a virtual reality ride in the cab of an E 10.

On the lowest floors, a more than 100 square meter H0 display layout runs; within about 15 minutes it changes from sunrise to night, showing several railway eras from 1900 to the 2010s. A glass assembly area offers a view of the final assembly of the locomotives, and a store in a locomotive-shed-style steel structure with factory outlet rounds off the visit.
