About the museum

The heart of the Gebr. Maisel brewery in Bayreuth is a striking brick building from the founding year 1887. The old house was preserved with its fittings and opened in 1981 as the Brewery and Cooperage Museum; in 1988 the Guinness Book of Records listed it as the largest beer museum.

Visitors see a machine and brew house where it seems the brewers and coopers have only stepped out for lunch: tools hang on the walls, and the steam engine and copper kettles are still in their places. The old cooling ship (Kühlschiff) serves as a gallery for around 400 rare enamel signs; collections of beer mugs and glasses are also on display.

Today the museum operates as Maisel's Bier-Erlebniswelt and is part of the Maisel & Friends experience area. The newly designed Braukunstwelt (brewing art world) shows interactively and with all the senses how many beer styles are made from water, malt, hops and yeast. The tour ends at the glass brewing workshop from 2015, where beer is brewed daily in a 25-hectoliter brew house. In 2024 the experience world was named Visitor Attraction of the Year at the World Beer Awards.
