About the museum

Preliminary work on a historical exhibition of the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg began as early as 1937; World War II interrupted the project, which was not resumed until 1951. The site chosen was the building of the former Forschungsanstalt für Mechanik und Gestaltung (research institute for mechanics and design), built in 1938 and by then vacant, on the factory grounds on Heinrich-von-Buz-Straße. The museum opened there in 1953.

Following renovation and expansion in 2002, a separate hall for commercial vehicles was added in 2004. On around 1,800 square meters, the exhibition traces the technical history of the group, whose origins lie in the Sander’sche Maschinenfabrik, founded in Augsburg in 1840. The focus is on products from the Augsburg plant: printing presses, steam engines and refrigeration machines, pumps, water turbines, and above all diesel engines – including the experimental engine with which Rudolf Diesel perfected his invention in Augsburg in the 1890s. The oldest exhibit is a hand-operated high-speed printing press from 1846.

Today, the museum is operated by Everllence SE, formerly MAN Energy Solutions; it continues to bear the MAN name in recognition of the long-established brand. Attached to it is a historical archive with around 1.5 million documents. Because the museum is also used for internal events, visits are possible only with prior registration.
