Special exhibition

20626 – Mazda 626 Sonderschau

Since early April 2026: models from five generations of the Mazda 626 mid-size series (1979–2002) and their technical innovations, presented within the permanent exhibition.

About the museum

The museum is the work of the Frey family of Augsburg car dealers. Walter Frey founded his dealership in Gersthofen in 1971, and it has been selling Mazda vehicles since 1978. Fascinated by the rotary engine, he began collecting in 1980 – starting with a Mazda Cosmo Sport from the US, which is still the centerpiece of the exhibition today. Together with his sons Joachim and Markus, he assembled around 120 vehicles that trace the manufacturer's model history since the 1930s.

As a museum building, the family acquired the old streetcar depot on the Senkelbach. The depot had been built in 1897/98 for the electric streetcar, passed to the city in 1908, was partially destroyed in World War II and rebuilt, and was abandoned as a depot in 1960. It was then used as a warehouse, a police station, and the clubhouse of a streetcar enthusiasts' association, among other things, before the Freys restored the largely listed halls.

In 2017, the first Mazda museum outside Japan opened here. Up to 60 vehicles are on display and are rotated regularly; a focus is on rare models with Wankel engines, while icons such as the Cosmo Sport remain on permanent display. Special exhibitions are devoted to individual model series – in 2026, for example, the Mazda 626. The building also houses an event area of around 700 square meters, a museum shop, and a bistro.
