About the museum

Martin Luther was born in Eisleben on November 10, 1483, when his parents had been living in the town for only a few weeks before moving on to Mansfeld. The small suburban house in which he was born was already a place of Luther veneration in the 16th century, but it fell into disrepair and burned down in the great town fire of 1689.

The town then acquired the property and in 1693 had a stately memorial house built that deliberately echoed older architectural forms. The first floor housed a school for poor children, while upstairs the painted “Schöner Saal” (Beautiful Hall) commemorated the Reformer. The house is therefore considered the oldest museum memorial dedicated to an individual in the German-speaking world.

Since 1996, the house, together with the house where Luther died and the Luther sites in Wittenberg, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site; since 1997, it has been managed by the Stiftung Luthergedenkstätten in Sachsen-Anhalt. Excavations in 2006 uncovered remains of the original birth house beneath the floor. In 2007, the ensemble was expanded with a modern new building housing the entrance and accessible exhibition spaces.

The permanent exhibition “Von daher bin ich – Martin Luther und Eisleben” (That Is Where I Come From – Martin Luther and Eisleben) shows over 250 objects on the history of the Luder family and mining in the Mansfeld region, along with a re-created family living room.
