1525! Aufstand für Gerechtigkeyt

Hands-on exhibition on the Peasants' War: on a walk-in game board, visitors take on the roles of princes, clergy and rebels. Included in admission to the Sterbehaus; the second part is at Luther's parents' house in Mansfeld.

About the museum

Martin Luther died on February 18, 1546, during a trip to his hometown of Eisleben, where he had come to settle an inheritance dispute among the counts of Mansfeld. The house in which he actually died stood on the market square and was torn down as early as the 16th century. Since the 17th and 18th centuries, the late Gothic town clerk's house at Andreaskirchplatz 7, opposite St. Andrew's Church (Andreaskirche), has instead been regarded as the place of his death.

In 1863 the Prussian state bought the building and had it remodeled in a historicizing style as a memorial by 1868; from 1892 to 1894 it received a neo-Gothic interior, and in 1894 the museum was established. Since 1996 the house has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and since 1997 it has belonged to the Stiftung Luthergedenkstätten in Sachsen-Anhalt (Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt).

After renovation and the addition of a multi-award-winning clinker brick extension by the architecture firm VON M, the museum reopened in 2013. The exhibition "Luthers letzter Weg" (Luther's Last Journey) recounts the reformer's final days while also asking how the Reformation changed views of dying and death and how people deal with them today. On display are the staged historic death rooms, epitaphs from St. Andrew's Church and unusual exhibits such as a porcupine. The house also hosts the hands-on exhibition on the Peasants' War of 1525.
