About the museum

The Mecklenburgisches Kutschenmuseum is located in Kobrow II, a village a few kilometers south of Sternberg in the Sternberger Seenland nature park. Initial planning began in 2003; from the end of 2005, halls for the exhibition were prepared on the site of a former state-owned farm, and the museum opened in June 2006. By 2010, further exhibition halls were added.

The museum is run by a nonprofit GmbH, and the vehicles are provided by a private collector. With more than 200 carriages, wagons, and sleighs from the period between about 1820 and 1950, the collection is among the most extensive of its kind in Germany. The pieces come from many countries, some even from North America.

On display are elegant town carriages, traveling and state carriages, including two vehicles from the royal stables (Marstall) in Berlin, transformation carriages with convertible bodies, mail and hunting coaches, delivery and utility wagons, military vehicles, horse-drawn sleighs, and small children's carriages. The exhibition is complemented by a large collection of travel and picnic items from the 19th and 20th centuries, by horse harnesses, and by tools of the wheelwrights, saddlers, and blacksmiths, whose crafts were needed to build and maintain the vehicles.
